Description
Summary:This article describes how theoretical principles have been put into practice in a CALL environment for teaching and learning English as a foreign language through a formal instructional programme, implemented in a blended-learning (b-learning) pedagogical model, for higher education learners. The b-learning pedagogical model underlying the English programme aims to develop integrated communicative competence skills, with an emphasis on listening comprehension, oral production and intercultural competence. The b-learning model has been conceived seeking a balance between flexibility and quality, combining the benefits of e-learning with the advantages of face-to-face instruction to achieve English language learning outcomes. This article depicts the b-learning environment implemented and the relationship among its components. It focuses on the use of technology in the design of CALL materials and tasks to create opportunities for interactional activity claimed to be beneficial for effective language learning; particularly, on three types of interactions made available through CALL: (a) between people, both face-to-face and through Computer Mediated Communication (CMC), (b) between person and computer (interpersonal) and (c) within the person's mind (intrapersonal interaction) (Chapelle, 2003; Ellis, 1999).
