Summary:This article examines the short story Something invented me by R. C. Phelan, its reception by the German author Paul Celan in the 1960s, and, more widely, the cultural and political backdrop, against which new semantic layers of the story become visible. In doing so, the contribution focuses on the aspect of authorship, which is the central theme of the short story, Celan’s main concern in reading and discussing it, as well as an implicit problem on a more general, social and cultural level regarding the nature of the publications the story first appeared in. The article thereby connects the results of a narratological analysis of the short story with the biographical implications of Celan’s interpretation thereof and integrates both in the surrounding of the U.S. cultural policy in the Cold War era, which formed the process and the agents of the story’s publication and is tacitly addressed in the story itself.
