COMPARISON OF THE PROPERTIES OF THE MgO-[Y.sub.2][O.sub.3] AND MgO-[Gd.sub.2][O.sub.3] CERAMIC COMPOSITES OBTAINED BY THE METHOD OF HOT COMPACTION

Data are presented for comparison of the optical, mechanical, and thermophysical properties of the MgO-[Y.sub.2][O.sub.3] and MgO-[Gd.sub.2][O.sub.3] ceramic composites consolidated through the hot compaction of the corresponding nanopowders obtained from the glycine-nitrate precursors by the method...

Description
Summary:Data are presented for comparison of the optical, mechanical, and thermophysical properties of the MgO-[Y.sub.2][O.sub.3] and MgO-[Gd.sub.2][O.sub.3] ceramic composites consolidated through the hot compaction of the corresponding nanopowders obtained from the glycine-nitrate precursors by the method of self-propagating high-temperature synthesis. It is shown that the MgO-[Y.sub.2][O.sub.3] ceramics having a lower density, a higher thermal conductivity, and a larger microhardness, as compared to those of the MgO-[Gd.sub.2][O.sub.3] ceramics, is the material of choice for the infrared shielding windows transparent for the radiation with a wavelength falling within the range 3-5 [micro]m.
