description This essay attempts to discover the position of aesthetics as a constraint to defer or to expedite a foreign work in theatre translation. Aesthetics inherent in philosophy of art has increasingly been used as a new perspective referring to a more specified territory in social sciences dealing with human production and consumption in arts. However, there is only a limited research within Translation Studies which accentuates the aesthetics motive for the production or nonproduction of translation. Theatre translation is a research field which covers more than the translation of a text or a certain text type, as it also refers to the translation of an art which inhabits living and complex relations of texts and peoples in flux. The inherence of translation as an object with its subject calls for a re-evaluation of the human factor and its collective influences on denial or desire to translate. This study problematizes the benefits of aesthetics as a constraint in the pre-translation process which reveals itself as non-translation. It is expected that a focus on aesthetics with a sociological formulation may open a new point of departure for (non)translation of arts and theatre translation in particular.
