description | After reviewing the literature, we proposed four categories to organize definitions of information design, each of which highlights fundamental principles for the practice. We found that information design defines itself as an activity of mediation per excellence, looking forward to ultimately become a transparent treatment of the data towards the user. By relating design theory to its history, we argue that this epistemological view comes from a modern worldview and unfolds as aesthetic choices that are not recognized as such--a paradigm that critical post-modernism form Cranbrook school argued against. At last, using concepts from Vilem Flusser we argue that form in design is not just about stylistic choices, but reflects models that structure reality, finally providing epistemological alternatives for the practice. |
