Summary: | Among the agricultural systems developed within the family farming is horticulture, which is responsible for supplying the markets, the creation of jobs and livelihoods. Thus, we aimed to characterize the commercial vegetable crop activity, focusing on the social and economic profile of farmers in Alta Floresta/MT, aiming to contribute to the planning and development of the activity at the municipal level. We used data from the 2006 Agricultural Census of IBGE concerning variables: labor, number of agricultural establishments, condition of the producer group of economic activities and horticulture products; fieldwork to conduct an interview with a questionnaire quality to -quantitative assessment of the social, environmental and economic characteristics of the farmers, and georeferencing of the headquarters of the properties of the interviewed farmers and the area of the production system through the Global Positioning System-GPS. Revealed a reduction in the number of persons per household and also the avoidance of rural youth to urban areas in search of employment opportunities and income. There was a higher number of men than women among the respondents. The difficulties faced by vegetable crops farmers is the lack of manpower to work the land and specialized technical assistance. It was concluded that the development of horticulture in the municipality of Alta Floresta demand for public policies that support this segment of family farming. |
