In this report, a case of fungemia due to C. lusitaniae an opportunist pathogen for immunosuppressed patients, misidentified as C. famata by VITEK[R] 2 (bioMerieux, Marcy l'Etoile, France) automated identification system was presented. Since isolate was identified as C. lusitaniae by conventional methods, its identification was confirmed using both MALDI-TOF/MS (Bruker Daltonics, Bremen, Germany) and Phoenix 100 (Becton Dickinson, Sparks, MD, USA) automated system. This case demonstrated that even though most of the clinically important Candida species can be identified by conventional methods, automated systems do not always make accurate identifications for rare species in particular. For this reason, conventional diagnostic methods should also be used together with automated systems, and further molecular diagnostic methods should be applied if necessary.
