Description
Summary:Serum ferritin, folate and iron levels were compared with CD4 levels in HIV seropositive anaemic women in the present study. Study samples were drawn from one hundred seropositive females (age 18-25 years) attending ART clinic after routine gynaecological and haematological investigations. Serum iron, folate and ferritin were analysed by chemiluminiscence technique and CD4 count was determined by using flow-cytometry. Anemia was prevalent in HIV seropositive women more so in women with low CD4 levels. Hb was positively correlated with serum iron, folate, ferritin, and CD4 count. Also, CD4 counts were positively correlated with serum iron, folate and ferritin. The findings of the present study suggest that these patients should have a regular monitoring of their folate and ferritin levels especially in those with lower CD4 levels before starting iron supplementation for anaemia.
