Material & Methods: Across sectional study was done in Institute of Human Behavior & Allied Sciences, New Delhi. 66 Dementia patients with average age of 69 [+ or -] 0.06 years, 44 patients with AD and 22 patients with vascular dementia were included in the study. All subjects underwent estimation of Interleukin-6 (IL-6), C-Reactive Protein (CRP) and albumin along with routine laboratory tests in serum. Results: Age was having significant but weak negative correlation with HMSE score, whereas duration of illness was strongly but inversely related with HMSE. IL 6, CRP and serum albumin levels had almost non-existent strength of relationship with age. The duration of illness had strong, positive and statistically significant relationship with IL 6, but CRP was moderately correlated. The relationship between HMSE score, a measure of cognitive decline, and level of inflammatory markers (including IL-6, CRP and albumin) after eliminating the effect of major confounders age & duration of illness showed moderately negative but statistically significant correlation between HMSE and IL-6. No relation could be elicited between HMSE and CRP and Albumin. Conclusion: IL6 can be important inflammatory biomarker for monitoring the progress of disease and therapeutic intervention.
