Summary: | Cities face urban challenges in areas such as supply chain, resilience, culture and tourism, population density, urban mobility, and zero carbon emissions. Cities that adopt technological solutions to tackle these challenges are known as smart cities, using technology to improve citizens quality of life and governmental efficiency. The concepts of smart and sustainable cities focus on establishing and monitoring performance indicators to promote sustainable development, covering economic, social, environmental, and digital factors. In Brazil, these indicators align with the smart city concept, with special emphasis on social aspects and information technology and communication. Since 2015, interest in smart cities has increased due to urbanization, climate change, and advancements in big data and artificial intelligence. However, interest has waned since 2022 due to regulatory issues, technological delays, budgetary constraints, and the global financial crisis. This article seeks to determine the theoretical relevance of studying smart cities and performance indicators from international research perspectives. To achieve this, a mapping of the behavior and development of scientific publications was conducted using bibliometric analysis methodology, aiming to identify studies related to smart cities and performance. There is significant participation from China and prominence of articles related to sustainability. It is concluded that there is great relevance in jointly studying these areas.
