Summary: | The soil of the Brazilian semi-arid region faces significant challenges due to adverse climatic conditions, such as prolonged droughts and high temperatures, which affect its fertility and productivity. Soil degradation, exacerbated by desertification and improper management, undermines agricultural production and contributes to social issues like hunger. This study analyzes the spatial variability and characteristics of soils in the region, highlighting the importance of sustainable agricultural practices to enhance soil fertility and productivity. The literature review reveals that low availability of phosphorus and organic matter, coupled with water scarcity, are critical challenges. The adoption of techniques such as organic fertilization, cover cropping, and sustainable management is proposed to reverse soil degradation. It concludes that ensuring the sustainability of agriculture in the semi-arid region requires integrating scientific and traditional knowledge, along with efficient water resource management. Keywords: Degradation. Soil Fertility. Sustainable Management. Semi-arid.
