Summary:In his encyclopedia of « Roman antiquities », Pirro Ligorio (1512-1581) dedicates a chapter to the word " ornithon " in which he describes at length the aviary that Varro build in Casinum ( Rust.3,5). According to his antiquarian method, Ligorio accompanies his comment with two drawings, that are the only drawings of the Renaissance preserved today and the basis of almost all the successive iconographical reconstruction. The article intends to publish for the first time, Ligorio’s text, comment and the drawings and to show how it reflects the debate about this difficult text during among the erudites of the Renaissance
