Embrittlement of a martensitic steel by liquid lead

Under usual conditions, a martensitic 9% Cr 1% Mo steel appeared to be immune against liquid lead embrittlement. Meanwhile, this does not mean that the system steel/lead should be considered to be completely safe with regards to the LME phenomenon. Our work shows that severe experimental conditions...

Description
Summary:Under usual conditions, a martensitic 9% Cr 1% Mo steel appeared to be immune against liquid lead embrittlement. Meanwhile, this does not mean that the system steel/lead should be considered to be completely safe with regards to the LME phenomenon. Our work shows that severe experimental conditions led to detrimental effects. This is of great concern from both fundamental and technological points of view since we observed a transgranular-like fracture mode (that precludes a grain boundaries penetration based LME mechanism) under experimental conditions that may be encountered in technological applications.
