Introduction: Often faced with potentially traumatic critical incidents, firefighters may experience both negative and positive changes. These include full or partial post-traumatic stress disorder, specific coping strategies and possibly post-traumatic growth. For firefighters, these factors might be related, and their experiences may be possibly different depending on the status of the participants (professional vs volunteer firefighters). Objective: The aim of this study is to explore and predict post-traumatic growth, post-traumatic stress disorder and coping strategies in a sample of French professional and volunteer firefighters. Method: A mixed research methodology was used. The Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist, the Post-traumatic Growth Inventory, the Brief-Cope Inventory, and a semi-structured research interview were used with sixteen participants, divided into two equal groups: a group of 8 professional firefighters and a group of 8 volunteer firefighters. Results: Post-traumatic growth was predicted at 63.4 % by traumatic symptomatology (altered arousal and reactivity) and by coping strategies (avoidance and positive thoughts). Intellectual changes predicted post-traumatic distress at 24.9 %. Firefighters who were not

There were no statistical differences between the volunteer and professional firefighter groups. Volunteer firefighters felt more vulnerable to critical incidents than professional firefighters because they have access to fewer effective resources. Conclusion: Post-traumatic growth among firefighters could be explained by post-traumatic distress and coping strategies. Other factors influencing post-traumatic growth would need to be investigated (coping flexibility, parenting, a sense of self-efficacy).</description><identifier>ISSN: 0003-4487</identifier><identifier>EISSN: 1769-6631</identifier><identifier>DOI: 10.1016/j.amp.2023.06.007</identifier><language>fre</language><publisher>Elsevier Masson SAS</publisher><subject>Firefighter ; Humanities and Social Sciences ; Post-traumatic syndrome ; Psychic adjustment ; Psychic trauma ; Rebuilding ; Resilience</subject><ispartof>Annales médico psychologiques, 2023-12</ispartof><rights>2023</rights><rights>Distributed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License</rights><lds50>peer_reviewed</lds50><woscitedreferencessubscribed>false</woscitedreferencessubscribed><cites>FETCH-LOGICAL-c1281-6f8d28ee73bb6001b0ec6e997cd7e0c03a3baa55edb496745ba66a45ce36a15b3</cites><orcidid>0000-0001-8695-7871 ; 0000-0001-9768-889X</orcidid></display><links><openurl>$$Topenurl_article</openurl><openurlfulltext>$$Topenurlfull_article</openurlfulltext><thumbnail>$$Tsyndetics_thumb_exl</thumbnail><link.rule.ids>230,314,780,784,885,27924,27925</link.rule.ids><backlink>$$Uhttps://hal.science/hal-04375876$$DView record in HAL$$Hfree_for_read</backlink></links><search><creatorcontrib>Auville, Mathias</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Alleaume, Baptiste</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Gipch, Anne Plantade</creatorcontrib><title>Croissance post-traumatique et stratégies de coping chez les sapeurs-pompiers civils français</title><title>Annales médico psychologiques</title><description>Souvent confrontés à des incidents critiques potentiellement traumatogènes, les pompiers peuvent vivre des changements négatifs, mais aussi parfois aussi positifs.
