Summary: | We review the principal advances and results of magnetic moment measurements for short-lived nuclear states. The latest variants of the technique combine projectile Coulomb excitation in inverse kinematics with intense transient magnetic hyperfine fields. A number of the measurements described were performed in collaboration with the Rutgers University group. Data spanning the range from
neon to
neodymium nuclei have provided new insights into the nuclear structure of the states in question. The results are discussed in terms of advanced microscopic calculations within the framework of the nuclear shell model. The highly improved experimental accuracy permits critical testing of appropriate configuration spaces of valence nucleons, as well as effective
NN interactions derived for these spaces. The applicability of the method to next-generation
g-factor measurements on exotic, radioactive projectiles and their eventual theoretical implications is assessed. |
