Summary: | There is an increase in electromagnetic activity in the marine environment, both commercially and recreationally, with the potential to adversely influence the environment. Sharks, rays and skates are sensitive to ultra low frequency electromagnetic waves in the range of 0-20 Hz, detecting intensities as low as 1 /spl mu/Vm/sup -1/. In order to determine safe distances for these animals, electromagnetic waves are modelled to determine the strengths at various distances from the source. A finite elements method approach is used to solve an equation based on the electric field strength derived from Maxwell's equations. |
