Description
Summary:The measuring of the ° Brix value is one of the processes done to estimate the amount of sugar in a pineapple for pineapple industries. The common practice used to obtain this measurement is through the use of a refractometer, which involves the pineapple getting damaged in the process, resulting to wasted pineapples and losses for the industry. This process may be altered that the measurement may be obtained without damaging the substance. In this paper, we present a design of a device that can indicate the quality of a pineapple through infrared light reflections. This device can identify the ° Brix value of a pineapple and its quality based on this value without damaging the pineapple in the process. This is done by creating an equation auto generated from MATLAB's artificial neural network that serves as an input to the Arduino software of the device. In order to validate the performance of the device, several situational tests are made, and the results are compared to a commercial refractometer and previous studies. The tests showed a speed ranging from 8.14 to 9.84 seconds per trial, accuracy rates ranging from 81.7% to 81.88% and a reliability rate of 66.7%.
