Summary: | Operating envelopes are emerging as a useful tool to maximise DER market participation while ensuring security of distribution networks. Existing methods to calculate operating envelopes often assume balanced networks, or model unbalanced networks and neglect certain risks specific to the unbalanced three-phase case. In this paper we propose a method to ensure robustness of operating envelopes with respect to voltage unbalance constraints, in addition to voltage magnitude constraints, derived using a linear model of unbalanced three-phase distribution networks. We achieve this by directly modelling the feasible operating region for DER with respect to voltage unbalance and magnitude constraints, then formulating a robust optimisation problem to calculate envelopes. Simulations using a non-convex power flow model demonstrate DER envelope robustness with respect to voltage unbalance and magnitude constraints, and we provide brief comments about sources of conservatism in results. |
