Summary: | Optimum operation of a distribution system relies on adequate visibility and situational awareness to allow decision making and better manage supply downtime. Hence, it is a resource and element of power system resilience. As part of a microgrid development in two Puerto Rico islands, the system operator is adopting state-of-the-art concepts to maximize the project objectives. One of the project foundational features includes distribution-connected phasor measurement units in a few strategic distribution system buses. These units provide accurately time-stamped data that allow not only continuous monitoring of these buses, but also estimating the states of the remaining distribution buses of the network. This capability can be used to bridge several gaps of steady-state operation and disturbance detection, and includes several use cases. One of the use cases of this infrastructure is addressed in this paper, which adopts an established state estimation method to inform voltage profiles, so that it will be able to use the information to optimally reconfigure the system topology when operating under certain scenarios. |
