Summary: | Storm inlet clogging remains to be a prominent factor that contributes to the flooding problem of Metro Manila. The city's infrastructure includes multiple storm grate inlets yet during flood, significant time is consumed to determine clogged inlets. Existing drainage monitoring systems has various level or flow sensors; however, this approach proves inadequate for timely flood mitigation as it fails to assess drainage inlet flooding and clogging. Thus the proponents made a system that monitors storm grate inlet capture efficiency and evaluate flow rate capacity. It accomplishes this by collecting data on rainfall levels, actual water flow rates at the grate inlets, flood levels, and critical drainage water levels. This data is transmitted wirelessly via LoRaWAN technology, triggering automatic alerts accessible through data visualization on an IoT cloud server. The system offers real-time capture efficiency monitoring, enabling the prompt identification of problematic grate inlets struggling to mitigate floods. Testing involved a simulated rainfall event using a scaled-down prototype, replicating the conditions along Antonio Villegas Street near Manila City Hall, featuring three interconnected storm grate inlets. The system's validation process encompassed accuracy, effectiveness, and reliability assessments, including tests with and without debris within the storm grate inlets. Our study underscores the significance of this innovative system in efficiently managing storm inlet clogging, ultimately contributing to flood prevention and improved urban resilience in Manila City. |
