Description
Summary:The electricity supply generated from non-renewable energy sources is shrinking in an alarming global situation. The transition towards renewable energy sources can be seen tremendously in the buildings sector as an effective way to reduce dependency on conventional energy sources with ambitious dreams to reduce carbon footprint. Albeit this transition, building management and owners are still facing the issue of pricing and tariffs. This research presents findings on energy consumption profile at Wisma R&D building, Universiti Malaya (UM) collected from the developed Building Energy Monitoring System (BEMS) located in the UMPEDAC Renewable Energy Laboratory. This study accounted for energy consumption consumed in the daytime (7:00 AM until 7:00 PM) and the night-time (7:00 PM until 7:00 AM) by discriminating its usage during the weekdays, weekends, and public holidays, has indicated 68% during the daytime and 32% during the night-time. The monthly total energy consumption of 131.83 megawatt-hour (MWh) emits 86.52 tons of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ). The building requires 1.12 megawatt (MW) PV solar systems as a mitigation plan that is able to contribute a total carbon avoidance of 84.30 tons of CO 2 . Findings from this research can be used for future planning on energy management systems by the University with enhanced development of research with control systems.
