Description
Summary:In recent years, the spread of disinformation has become an issue with the increasing popularity of social media. This study analyzes the actual situation in information diffusion in Japan, focusing on echo chambers. An echo chamber is a factor that causes information polarisation on social media, but research on it is still scarce in Japan. We collected relevant data from social media on a disinformation example in Japan, which became a hot topic in the previous year, and analyzed the characteristics of information diffusion while using existing methods. This analysis detects communities of information dissemination that appear to be due to echo chambers, and also shows what kind of posts were disseminated in each community. The results of this analysis show that echo chambers also occur in information diffusion in Japan. Also, this analysis clarifies that the most rapidly spread post may have been due to a backfire phenomenon, which further radicalises conventional ideas. Furthermore, the presence of middle media, which is considered to be a characteristic of Japanese disinformation diffusion, was confirmed.
