Summary: | Rapid large scale daytime photoluminescence imaging in utility scale solar farms, whereby luminescence images of hundreds or even thousands of crystalline silicon solar panels are acquired simultaneously, was demonstrated by our group recently. Resulting photoluminescence images of large solar farm sections contain unique quantitative information about voltage mismatch between series connected strings of modules resulting from performance variations between modules. The negative impact of such voltage mismatch is discussed, suggesting the use of blocking diodes in each module string to prevent significant balancing currents. An innovative PL based analysis method that is enabled by the presence of string blocking diodes is proposed and will be demonstrated experimentally. |
