Summary: | The problem of selection of the "protective distance", i.e. a maximum distance between protected equipment and SPD assuring still the equipment protection, is investigated and discussed. By means of adequate computer simulation (P SPICE and ATP programs), the evaluation of the protection distance of the SPD is performed as function of the voltage protection level of SPD, the type of SPD (spark gap or varistor), the impulse withstand voltage level (or the immunity level) of the equipment and its equivalent input impedance, the steepness of the lightning current, the characteristics of the line conductors linking the SPD to the equipment. |
