Summary:40 Gb/s transmission over long distances presents numerous technical challenges. Rapid progress in key technological areas has allowed laboratory demonstration of 40 Gb/s DWDM transmission over transoceanic distances. The primary approach is quasi-linear transmission over dispersion flattened spans. Quasi-linear transmission is made possible by rapid advances in the key technological areas of transmission fiber, modulation formats, FEC codes, and distributed Raman amplification.
