Summary: | The field lines of Poynting vector around a small particle are investigated on the basis of classical Mie theory [G. Mie, (1908)]. A particle can effectively absorb incident energy from its surrounding regions, resulting in a great increasing in its optical absorption cross-section, which could be much greater than its geometrical cross-section. In general, the absorbed energy flows into the particle through some limited portion of its surface instead of the whole surface. For small /spl epsiv/" particle, the excited particle would release energy by dipole radiation but this radiation is confined in a small region near to the particle. Our simulation also reveals the generation of the "optical vortex" around the particle, as that could be used for a new principle of magnetic storage. |
