Description
Summary:Using computer to enhance learning has been around for more than 40 years. It can be realized in various forms from computer-aided instructions (CAI), intelligent tutoring system (ITS), to Web-based learning (WBL), and elearning systems. We are working on research in which we have developed an elearning system framework. One of the framework components is assessment. The assessment is integrated in the framework to evaluate student knowledge in order to support student learning, and educational decision making. Most of the existing systems use a static assessment technique, which has fixed questions presented to all students following "one size fits all" approach. In this paper, we present a flexible adaptive assessment functional model that provides a system with better understanding of student levels and shows their weaknesses and strengths. The model is based on the characteristics of students and their performances. In addition, the model provides a dynamic assessment strategy that allows teachers to set up an appropriate assessment mechanism for their students. Moreover, it specifies the functions that should be performed by each assessment component.
