Summary:A tutorial review of the dc and ac electric-drive field is presented. The goal is to present fundamental concepts, principle concerns, and key developments in electric-drive technology. Principles of ac and dc power converters and ac and dc motors are presented. Then the combination of the converter and motor to provide a complete drive system is discussed along with drive-system characteristics and methods for analyzing performance. Finally, some application guidelines for both ac and dc systems are given.
