Summary: | Continued development has brought about an electrolyte-starved cell operation with MgO powder separator and overcharge tolerance. This same technology is being used in development of a bipolar Li/FeS/sub 2/ battery. This LiCl-LiBr-KBr molten electrolyte battery is operated at 400-425 degrees C. An overcharge tolerant cell design safeguards the Li/FeS/sub 2/ cells in a bipolar battery and allows charge/equalization with simple trickle-charging. New materials and hermetic seal development have progressed to a four-cell bipolar Li/FeS/sub 2/ stack test, having over 150 cycles. A prototype sealed bipolar Li/FeS/sub 2/ battery has a projected performance of 191 Wh/kg specific energy with 500 W/kg peak specific power through 80% depth of discharge.< > |
