Summary: | The chromatic dispersion in standard single mode fibers puts a fundamental limit to the transmission distance in conventional high speed optical communication systems. Soliton transmission is a very promising technique to avoid this limitation. We demonstrate 4 Gb/s soliton transmission on 310 km standard non dispersion-shifted single mode fiber using 55 ps pulses from a gain-switched MQW laser diode. This technique is applicable for upgrading the transmission capacity in dispersion limited terrestrial communication systems.< > |
