Summary:Evolutionary scenarios for metropolitan area networks (MANs) are described. They are compatible with, and complementary to, to the early expected forms of the broadband integrated services digital network (B-ISDN) and the third generation of local area networks (LANs). All use the asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) of operation. In this context, the MAN is seen as a distributor/concentrator switch operating on customer premises and in the periphery of the B-ISDN.< >
