Grating-assisted phase matching in extreme nonlinear optics

We propose a new technique for phase-matching frequency upconversion into the X-ray region. High harmonic generation in the presence of a weak counter-propagating quasi-CW beam is equivalent to low-order harmonic generation via grating-assisted phase-matching.
