Suppression of modal birefringence of InP-based waveguides by compensated tensile strain

Compensated tensile strain may be used to suppress the modal birefringence of InP-InGaAsP-InP planar waveguides. Correct balance between tensile- and compressively-strained layers will yield birefringence-free waveguides with zero net strain.
