Integrated external cavity for tunable devices

Summary: | We have designed an integrated optical device that can be used as the tuning element of an erbium-doped fiber (EDF) ring laser and simultaneously as a coupler for the pump light. The device is based on a concave grating etched into a planar waveguide. Tuning is achieved by moving one end of the EDF along the edge of the device. The grating can be tuned from 1545 to 1555 nm, with theoretical grating losses less than 1.5 dB throughout this range. |
