Summary:Energy security, economic growth, and global warming are driving nations to develop electric vehicle technologies to reduce dependence on oil. Energy storage (batteries) will be critical to the success of this change. Utilities are also looking at energy storage throughout the grid to facilitate inclusion of renewable sources and improve the reliability and utilization of the existing grid infrastructure. Battery technology is reviewed with a focus on how improvements in lithium-ion technology will play a critical role in new transportation and utility systems.
