Summary:Describes measurement and signal processing techniques to identify energy transmission in a viscoelastic medium. The source of the energy is turbulent flow in an elastic tube which is embedded in a urethane solid. The flow field in the pipe is laminar until it reaches a blockage which makes the flow transition from laminar to turbulent. The resulting turbulent flow field transmits energy into the methane which is converted into propagating wave energy. This energy is measured on the surface of the solid using PVDF motion sensors at several locations. The resulting measurements are then processed in such a manner that the phase velocity and energy content of the wave can be identified. This test is intended as a proof-of-concept experiment to show that the energy conversion at blockages in flow fields can be detected.
