Summary:The paper discusses the harsh environmental conditions of automotive sensors to show the technical problems in working on a new sensor design. The question is discussed which qualities a new automotive sensor must fulfil to enter mass production. A check list is presented that an R&D team should consider before a new automotive sensor design is launched. This approach is demonstrated on already established automotive sensors for engine control, namely crankshaft-position and air-flow sensors. A solution is presented in order to simplify marketing of future robust automotive sensors.
