Summary: | The ability to filter harmonic current with adequate damping over a selected frequency range can become necessary whenever harmonic current injected by nonlinear loads has appreciable components at or near one or more of the resonant frequencies of the network. The C-type harmonic filter can be designed to meet these requirements; however, the design of these banks becomes quite challenging when the power system is networked and has existing shunt capacitor banks. Furthermore, there is very little information available in the literature regarding the design C-type filters applied in HV or EHV networks. The following paper addresses the major technical challenges associated with the design and application of C-type harmonic filter banks in HV and EHV networks, and provides a novel methodology for analyzing filter performance and determining component ratings. The paper also serves as a consolidated reference for the design and application of C-type filter banks that are installed in HV and EHV networks. |
