Description
Summary:This paper presents the 16-channel frame-level gigabit capable PON (GPON) reach extender that can provide a low-cost design, low-power consumption, and high link budget of a legacy GPON with a backward compatibility according to ITU-T G.984.3 standard. The proposed frame-level reach extender performs the signal retiming, wavelength conversion, and upstream burst mode to continuous mode (BM-to-CM) signal conversion using a GPON transmission convergence (GTC) sublayer functions to increase overall transmission reach and splitting ratio according to ITU-T G.984.6. This frame-level reach extender can provide a total bandwidth of 40 Gbit/s through 2-port architecture per line card for low-cost and low-power design. It can also accommodate 2,048 end-users at transmission distance of 50 km through the increased link budget of 59 dB, and satisfy the error-loss free service in 1010 packet transmission.
