Description
Summary:The main features of the Siemens fuzzy coprocessor family, the 8-bit fuzzy coprocessor SAE 81C99A and the 12-bit fuzzy coprocessor SAE 81C991, are reviewed. Benchmark results show the superior performance of the C99A compared to a software solution especially in case of large fuzzy systems. Furthermore, conditions for market success of fuzzy hardware are discussed. An image segmentation application for the 12-bit coprocessor is presented, which requires less user input, while providing at least as good segmentation results as conventional methods. For the 8-bit coprocessor, first results of a challenging automotive application-the implementation of advanced braking functions in the new electronic brake system "brake by wire"-are presented.
