Description
Summary:This paper presents a new method for the sensorless Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) of a wind turbine based on a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) to supply a DC load. The model of Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS) consists of a wind turbine, drive train, PMSG, and power converters. The proposed method based on sensorless wind speed, air density and turbine parameters, generates the output used to control two types of converters used: a diode rectifier followed by a buck and an active rectifier, using the same MPPT algorithm, the purpose is to compare them. At first, we show the advantage of using a field oriented control (FOC) of the PMSG and the necessity of applying the MPPT on the complete chain. Then we describe the speed estimator used to design a sensorless MPPT. Simulations on Matlab-Simulink can be found at the end of this paper, confirming the performance of the proposed approach.
