Summary: | This paper proposes a new heuristic method that can be utilized for determination of shunt compensation levels at system buses to reduce MVAR transports across the system and to improve system voltage profile. It takes a fresh look at modeling of the transmission lines for power systems analysis and presents the resulting new insights. With this modification of the traditional transmission line model, a new interpretation of the real and reactive power flows is developed. As a result, the concept of "Up-Hill" MVAR flow is introduced. Utilizing a solved power flow case output, a very simple albeit heuristic method for system voltage profile improvement via appropriate MVAR injections at system buses is proposed. It is also shown that phase-angle reductions across the system can be achieved for the same real power loading levels. |
