Summary: | The growing interest in mass customization has necessitated the implementation of flexible fixtures in manufacturing. Scheduling techniques for traditional fixtures are incapable of handling those of the flexible type. The paper presents a scheduling technique for reconfigurable modular fixtures with customized parts. A cellular manufacturing system is employed. A dedicated cell is implemented as a facilitator of the reconfigurations and recirculation of fixtures. The scheduling method creates fixture-part mappings, which are then optimally sequenced on each fixture to minimize the degree of reconfiguration required, before the fixture and part operations are scheduled in-tandem to locally minimize the idle times in the manufacturing system described. |
