Summary:This paper describes the development of the family of converters termed 'integrated and intelligent power modules' for voltage-fed converter drives. The development of a practical compact intelligent power module that is oriented on economic needs with high level of functionality is demonstrated. The future IPM topology for application in the field of AC drives is reviewed. The paper concludes with an assessment of the potential use of IPM for converters in AC drive applications.
