Description
Summary:Wide band microstrip antennas are realized by using multi-resonator technique which uses techniques like, parasitic patches or slot cut inside the same. These designs are implemented with respect to patch fundamental mode. Recently design of gap-coupled 90 0 Sectoral microstrip antennas is reported that gives bandwidth of 1.6% in 9000 MHz frequency range. This paper presents detailed analysis to highlight upon functioning of broadband microstrip antenna with respect to patch resonant modes. In gap-coupled design, the wide band response is result of coupling between higher order TM 30 modes with respect to TM32 and TM04 modes of fed and parasitic patches. Resonant length formulation at higher order patch modes is presented. Frequencies calculated using same agrees closely with simulated frequencies. Using proposed formulations design of gap-coupled 90 0 patches is proposed for given TM 30 mode frequency which yields BW of more than 12% with broadside pattern.
