Summary:In this paper, a MRI-compatible microwave ablation applicator with tumor detection abilities is presented. The applicator is capable to operate within the frequency range of 4 GHz to 8 GHz which includes the frequency band for industry, science and medicine (ISM) between 5.725 GHz and 5.875 GHz. The applicator detects permittivity changes such as those that occur between healthy and malignant tissue. The sensitive area of the applicator is analyzed by using the results of the experiments in MRI environment and by simulations using full-wave simulation software CST microwave studio, leading to a sensitive point at 1 cm behind the sensor tip.
