Summary: | Prunus spinosa L. is a medicinal plant found in the flora of many countries, especially in Central and Eastern Europe, being used for various pharmacological actions. In this study, the antioxidant properties of the species were evaluated on specific salivary biomarkers, in healthy volunteers, smokers and non-smokers, but also in subjects with periodontal disease using an aqueous extract obtained from the dried fruits of the harvested species from Tulcea County, Romania. The results obtained show that, regarding the two evaluated markers, cotinine and salivary interleukin 6 in groups of patients with superficial and deep chronic periodontal disease can serve as tools for evaluating the potential therapeutic effect of Prunus spinosa L. extract in the periodontal disease. |
