Summary:The importance of medicinal plants in maintaining human health has always played a vital role, leading to a growing interest in their use, both for their therapeutic properties and in alternative therapies, and consequently increasing their utilization worldwide. In traditional and herbal medicine, the main concern is the limitation of the consumption of teas from medicinal plants contaminated with heavy metals that can cause serious effects on human health. Heavy metal contamination of herbal medicines is a global threat to human health, especially at levels that exceed safe concentration limits. Exposure to heavy metals such as arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe) can cause adverse health effects and toxicity. The main objective of the present paper is to discuss about the current problems caused by environmental factors contamination with heavy metals with major focus to their tolerance and accumulation in ornamental plants.
