Summary: | A specialized information system (SIS) is a type of information system that is designed to support a specific business or organization. SISs are typically used to manage large amounts of data. A software platform is a kind of software that creates value through a synergy, by surrounding itself with an ecosystem of external connections, data, and processes. The goal of platform thinking is to build a software platform that is a foundation for a new ecosystem. In this paper, we distill the best practice of building a successful software platform by learning from the history of Salesforce, SAP, and Amazon. We also offer a set of guidelines to help SISs transform into software platforms. However, we describe that a software platform is not a superior software architecture, but rather a new business model. |
