Summary:Solid-rotor switched reluctance machine (SRM) is a viable option for harsh operating conditions such as high speeds and high shaft temperatures. However, this machine suffers from high core loss. An alternative machine, namely, slitted-rotor SRM is proposed and evaluated in this paper. The static flux-linkage characteristics of the proposed slitted-rotor SRM are measured at various values of peak current, excitation frequencies and rotor positions. These characteristics are shown to be much superior than the corresponding characteristics of solid-rotor SRM. The measured no-load losses at different speeds are much lower for the proposed SRM than those for the solid-rotor one. The measured no-load loss at rated speed (i.e. 10,000 rpm) is found to be at an acceptable level of 150 W, which is around 3 % of the designed rated power of the machine. Further, the proposed SRM is loaded at low speeds using an eddy current brake. It is found that the output torque of proposed SRM is 4.5 Nm at rated current of 30 A, which is around 95 % of designed rated torque of the machine (i.e. 4.7 Nm).
